On 3rd March, 1915, the 1st Royal Berkshire battalion of 6 Brigade, 2nd Division, moved into the front line near Givenchy where they remained until relieved on 7th March. On 5th March, the day on which Walter Hay was killed, a quiet morning was followed by trench mortar activity by both sides and the enemy’s large minenwerfers (minnies) blew in part of the battalion’s right hand trench. |
